چکیده

A potential-based model of three-dimensional (3D) workspace is proposed in this paper for ensuring obstacle avoidance in path planning. It is assumed that the workspace boundary is uniformly distributed with generalized charges. The potential due to a point charge is inversely proportional to the distance to the power of an integer, the order of the potential function. It is shown that such potential functions and their gradients due to polyhedral surfaces can be derived analytically, and thus can facilitate efficient collision avoidance. Intuitively, the potential fields and their effects on object paths should be spatially continuous and smooth. The continuity and differentiability properties of a particular potential function are investigated. In theory, by minimizing the repulsion between object and obstacles, the approach completely eliminates the possibility of a collision between them if the dynamics of the moving object is ignored.

The Obstacle-Restriction Method (ORM) for Reactive Obstacle Avoidance in Difficult Scenarios in Three-Dimensional Workspaces

This master’s project addresses the obstacle avoidance problem in difficult scenarios in three-dimensional workspaces. The main contribution of this project is the theoretical extension of the ObstacleRestriction Method (ORM) in two dimensions to work in 3D workspaces. This master’s thesis describes a reactive obstacle avoidance technique to drive a robot in dense, cluttered and complex environ...

Potential-Based Modeling of 2D Regions Using Non-uniform Source Distributions

One of existing approaches to path planning problems uses a potential function to represent the topological structure of the free space. Newtonian potential was used in [1] to represent object and obstacles in the two-dimensional (2-D) workspace wherein their boundaries are assumed to be uniformly charged. In this paper, more general, nonuniform distributions are considered. It is shown that fo...

Obstacle and Collision Avoidance Control Laws of a Swarm of Boids

This paper proposes a new obstacle and collision avoidance control laws for a three-dimensional swarm of boids. The swarm exhibit collective emergent behaviors whilst avoiding the obstacles in the workspace. While flocking, animals group up in order to do various tasks and even a greater chance of evading predators. A generalized algorithms for attraction to the centroid, inter-individual swarm...

Manipulator control with superquadric artificial potential functions: theory and experiments

Previous work in arti cial potentials has demonstrated the need for an obstacle avoidance potential that closely models the obstacle, yet does not generate local minima in the workspace of the manipulator. This paper presents a potential function based on superquadrics, which closely models a large class of object shapes. This potential function also prevents the creation of local minima when i...
